Chapter Seventeen

Artemis heard voices again—her father's and someone else's. She opened her eyes and discovered she was at home in the study. She tried to sit up and found she could barely manage. Her arms and legs answered to her, but they were so weak and slow.

“I don’t know what to tell you, Sergeant,” her father was saying in the hallway.

“I’ve heard of it before. Some sort of Satan worshippers or something.”

“Something like that.”

“Always heard rumors but never thought I’d see the likes of it myself.”

“Yes, it’s very unusual.”

The sergeant snorted. “That’s one word for it,” he said then sobered. “Was a near thing. We didn’t have the exact address, just the street. Took us a few tries to find you. A few more minutes and …. Well.”

Artemis’s legs wobbled beneath her as she stood. She was still wearing the same clothes, she realized. Must not have been too long ago. The memory of what happened was hazy at best, but she remembered the important part. She’d given her powers to Cain. The thought made her stomach turn.

He’d been ready to kill her father. That thought gave her renewed strength. She wanted to see him for herself.

She tottered in place, gripping the arm of the sofa for balance, then slowly padded across the room to the door.

“I don’t how I’m going to report any of this,” Treadway said. “I’ve got—”

His attention shifted to Artemis as she reached the doorway. Her father followed his gaze and immediately came to her side as she sagged against the door frame.

“You shouldn’t be up,” he said, putting an arm around her back to steady her. “Let’s get you back in here, shall we?”

She looked at him unsurely, her mind still having trouble holding on to any one thought. He’d been hurt, she remembered and her eyes quickly fell to the bandage on his neck where Cain had cut him, but he seemed all right otherwise.

He helped her back to the sofa and she sank down deep into the cushions.

“Is there anything I can do?” the sergeant asked uneasily as he stood halfway in and halfway out of the room.

Her father shook his head. “She’ll be fine with rest,” he said, but she saw the worry in his eyes.

He urged her to lie down. She didn’t want to, but her body could do little else at his gentle coaxing. He touched her hair briefly before rejoining the sergeant.

“Sergeant, I …” he began, but shook his head. “I cannot thank you enough for saving my daughter.”

The sergeant’s eyes drifted over to Artemis. “I’m glad we got there in time. I have to admit, I almost told Miss Ashcroft no when she telephoned. Was quite a story, kidnapping and all, and in another borough to boot. But … after all you’ve done for me, I guessed it was the least I could do to go and look into it.”

“I am certainly grateful you did,” her father said.

The sergeant nodded. “I’m sure the Haggerston blokes’ll have questions. Hell, I’ve got questions, and I was there.
